Blue Class

Welcome to Blue Class.

In Year 2 we love to learn by exploring, talking, being active and creative whilst developing independent working skills. This year we will have lots of fun learning new information and skills both indoors and outside. We cover a variety of topics through the year using the National Curriculum and ideas from the children. Interesting trips and visitors into school are an important part of making learning enjoyable. We value family input in our learning, so if you feel you could contribute to our topics please let us know.

Every term we have a homework grid which can be completed at your own pace throughout the term, please ensure you have completed all the tasks by the last week of the term when we have a homework sharing session. Children have the opportunity to change their books on a daily basis and can gain points for our weekly reading challenge, please try and read every night as reading is such an important part of school life.

Mrs Pagett is the teaching assistant in Year 2 and teaches PSHE and Music once a week as well.  Mrs Harper is a teaching assistant who also helps in Year 2. The children also get weekly PE lessons taught by Sports Heroes.  Sometimes our class will also be covered by Mrs Jones, Mrs Barker or Mrs Sinha-Royle.

I’m looking forward to a fantastic year! Miss Tumelty

A Step Back in Time – Term 4

Welcome back to school, we hope you have all had a lovely half-term and are ready for a busy term ahead!

This term we are stepping back to the Victorian era and learning all about a local hero Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We will be learning about his famous inventions and will be having an exciting trip to the SS Great Britain later this term (30.3.17 – look at for more information coming soon).

Year 2 SATs are taking place in May, it is incredibly important for all children to be in school for the whole of May. We will be holding a SATs meeting (date to be confirmed) to inform you of the recent National assessment changes and how SATs will be carried out at Broadway. To support the preparation for SATs will not be doing a homework grid in Term’s 4 and 5 because we would like you to focus on daily reading, practising Maths targets and spellings.

We are continuing to hold our reading club each Monday afternoon at half past 2, if you can volunteer in either class please let us know.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to come in and see us.

Thank you, Miss Tumelty and Miss Rowse

Big Writing – Talk Topics

As part of our weekly Big Writing we will be sending out a talk topic for you to discuss at home with your child ahead of them completing their writing on a Thursday.

Big Writing is where children have an opportunity to write independently to develop their stamina for writing and to embed the skills they have been taught.

The purpose of the talk topic is for the children to have an opportunity to talk about the content of their big writing activity prior to writing enabling them to come up with ideas and develop confidence. We do not expect to see any writing or evidence of this – it simply an opportunity to talk!

If you have any questions regarding this please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher.

Thanks, Miss Tumelty and Miss Rowse

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

We hope you have all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year and are refreshed and ready for a busy term!

Our new whole school topic is ‘A Step Back in Time’ with different year groups focusing on different periods of history.

Year 2 are going to be studying the history of castles during Term 3, we will be looking at the features of a castle, the Battle of Hastings, castle maps and plans, Kings and Queens and completing some fantastic art linked to castles.

Bodiam Castle, East Sussex, UK

As you know Year 2 is an important year for the children as they will be taking their SATs during May. Please read with your child on a daily basis and practise their maths targets as this is vital to support them with their learning in school.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask,

Thanks, Miss Tumelty and Miss Rowse

Ice rink and winter wonderland!

As you know the run up to Christmas was very busy but also very exciting!

We were lucky to have an ice-rink in school for a whole day and we celebrated the end of our topic with an evening winter wonderland event.

Here are a couple of photos of these events, to see more please look at Blue Class page on the VLE.

Robin Hood Day

Our Robin Hood day was lots of fun. The day was full of exciting activities. We enjoyed making Robin Hood hats, soup and maps. We hunted for Robin Hood characters in the woodland and even had a go at some archery! Go to My VLE to see all the photos!
